What is MFA and Why Do We Need It for Cybersecurity?

What is MFA?

MFA stands for multi-factor authentication. It is sometimes referred to as two-factor authentication, 2FA, or dual factor authentication. It is a security enhancement that requires you to present two pieces of information: something you know and something you have. Something you know – this is typically a password or a PIN. Something you have – this is typically a code generated on a smartphone app or hardware token.

Why do we need MFA?

For security! In the current era of ransomware affiliates rampantly deploying phishing and vishing and social engineering attacks, we need higher levels of cyber protection to prevent hackers from gaining access to personal information and sensitive corporate data. Data breaches are at an all-time high and just having a strong password isn’t enough to stop cybercriminals anymore. Cybersecurity experts are recommending a layered approach to cyber hygiene that includes security awareness training, access security, cloud security and endpoint security. MFA is an important piece of that approach. Ecessa and JDL Technologies are teaming up to provide this added security to our clients.

In fact, one JDL Technologies client who recently underwent a layered security upgrade saw amazing results. By working with JDL Technologies to enhance their email security, train all staff on security awareness and deploy an MFA solution, they went from having up to five compromised Office 365 accounts per month to zero.

“Multifactor authentication is the closest thing we have to a silver bullet for preventing account compromise attacks.”

Robert McClure, vCIO of JDL Technologies
