Managed Service Provider United World Telecom Selects Ecessa’s WAN Device to Deliver 24/7 Internet Uptime

PowerLink WAN link controller automates the management of multiple T1 connections and acts as authoritative DNS server

Plymouth, MN – October 13, 2009 – Ecessa announced today that United World Telecom, a leading switch-based telecommunications service provider, has deployed Ecessa’s PowerLink WAN link controller. By adding PowerLink to the WAN, automates the management of redundant Internet connections that support the VoIP and web services and provides continuous Internet uptime to United World Telecom’s retail, wholesale, and corporate customers who depend on continuous access to telecommunication services.

United World Telecom relies on multiple T1 connections to deliver to customers its VoIP and web services such as account management for international callback service, international calling cards, direct dial, ANI callback, wholesale international calling, and Web trigger callback services. Initially, United World Telecom had only one T1 connection which left it vulnerable to network outages. When Internet outages from its service provider became unacceptable, the decision was made to add more T1 circuits and front-end them with a PowerLink WAN link controller. The PowerLink provides automatic connection failover of network traffic in the event that one or several of the T1 connections goes down. “If we didn’t have Internet redundancy built in, and any of our T1s went down, our VoIP and web services would not be available to our customers during that time. As you can imagine, that is unacceptable to us,” notes Adrian Caramaliu, Network Engineering Manager for United World Telecom.

“By having Internet connection redundancy, we no longer have to deal with network outages,” says Caramaliu. “PowerLink eliminates our having to react to an Internet service provider outage by providing us with extra protection with WAN redundancy. Network outages do occur quite frequently. However, with PowerLink automatically managing the failover, and then load balancing traffic back when the connection comes back online, neither the IT department nor our customers are affected.”

United World Telecom also uses PowerLink’s authoritative DNS server for inbound traffic. PowerLink translates multiple domain names into IP addresses thereby simplifying IP address management. For example, when a user accesses the site, a DNS request is made to PowerLink requesting an IP address associated with a specific domain name which directs users to specific content or services located on a server. Additionally, since PowerLink is resident at the domain site and is able to directly monitor the status of the T1 connections, a failed connection is removed from the DNS tables immediately upon failure. By setting the host name record Time-to-Live (TTL) to a short period (i.e. 30 seconds), the DNS caching servers will flush their address tables and will update them from the PowerLink regularly and thus be informed when a link fails.

“We find that managed service providers receive much value from our products, as they rely upon the Internet to deliver their services. If the network connection that delivers their services goes down, their business goes down too,” comments Jason Breyer, vice president of sales at Ecessa. “Products like PowerLink are becoming a must have for MSPs that are concerned about network disaster recovery, link optimization, and security.”
